Spēk, the translator that speaks in your own voice, is now on Google Play

The ArtemisWorx app that clones your voice from one minute of reading and uses it to talk in 22 languages is now a native Android app, with notifications and a Plus plan. The iPhone version is in App Store review.

ArtemisWorx LLC today released Spēk on Google Play. Spēk is a live two-way translator with a difference: the other person hears your words in their language, in your own cloned voice. The iPhone version has been submitted to the App Store and is expected to follow shortly.

Record a short passage once, about a minute. From then on, hold a button, talk, let go. Spēk transcribes what you said, translates it, and says it aloud in the other language in your own cloned voice. Hand the phone over and the other person answers the same way. No typing, no robot voice, no reading off a screen.

“Translation apps have worked for years. What they never did was sound like you. The first time my mother-in-law heard me speak Portuguese in my own voice, the conversation stopped being about the app. That is the whole idea. The app disappears and two people are just talking.”

Jeff Hagopian, founder, ArtemisWorx

Spēk was built in a family that lives in two languages, English and Brazilian Portuguese, and tested at the dinner table before it was tested anywhere else.

What Spēk does

  • Quick Talk. One phone, two people. Pick their language, hold, talk, pass the phone. Ready-made phrases for the taxi, the pharmacy and the front desk, and a keyboard for when you would rather not say it out loud.
  • Table Talk. One phone in the middle of the table, up to four people, each speaking their own language and each heard in their own voice.
  • Two phones, anywhere. Family and friends on their own phones, across the room or across the world, each in their own language. New messages arrive as notifications.
  • Hands-free. Turn it on and just talk. Spēk works out who is speaking and translates both ways.
  • Translate a sign or menu. Point the camera at any printed text and hear it read in your language.
  • Learn the line you just heard. Tap any message and practice saying it in the other language.
  • Friends around the world. An opt-in directory and map to find someone to practice with, with practice partners available in ten languages from day one.

Twenty-two languages: English, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, French, Italian, German, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Filipino, Swedish, Greek and Armenian (Eastern and Western). The interface itself is available in all of them.

Your voice is yours

Spēk asks for explicit consent, in your own language, before recording. A voice model is used only to speak that person’s own translated words. It is never sold, never used to train other models, and can be deleted, along with the whole account, from inside the app at any time.

Pricing

Spēk is free to use every day. Spēk Plus removes the daily limit on translations spoken in your own voice: US$9.99 a month or US$59.99 a year, sold through Google Play, and through the App Store once the iPhone app is released. Prices are shown in local currency at checkout.

Availability

Spēk is available today for Android on Google Play, and on the web at spek2me.com, where visitors can hear their own voice speaking another language before installing anything. The iPhone app has been submitted to the App Store; until it is approved, iPhone users can use Spēk on the web, and the App Store badge will appear on spek2me.com the day it arrives.
